SLEEP
Sleep is a protective physiological phenomenon which asserts itself except in certain conditions of disease.Nature has provided for this rest, occurring between varying periods after every form of sustained activity. It is not so much the period of sleep as the depth of sleep which is important for persons who get up with tired feeling even after a prolonged sleep have really not rested.
Although any comfortable position of the body may be regarded as suitable for sleep modern scientists alike the ancient yogins commend sleeping on the right side or daksinasana as a very favourable position for such a purpose. The secret of sleep however should be learned from the technique of voluntary general relaxation which when successful has been found to be even more beneficial to both the body and mind than sleep.Besides the valuable experiments on sleep by Strumpell Mosso and others the charts of laboratory data on yoga relaxation appearing in our various publications when studied comparatively conclusively prove how this particular type of relaxation assures far more favourable physiological reactions than sleep. For example in yoga relaxation the fall in the number of respiration blood pressure and the reduction of beats in the pulse are nearly 10 p.c over those obtainable in ordinary sleep.
Whatever the objective it is wrong to suppose that without proper care of the body good health could be maintained or that profound experiences in higher life are possible even without good health.Scientific Yoga therefore wisely regards both good health and longevity as the essential fruits of physical education which alone provide for the enabling circumstances that transform the sporadic subliminal experiences into the mature and habitual realization of Self.
As the first step these yoga practices supply woman with a safe and rational system of physical education which proposes through positive and sedate good health to lay the real foundation for the attainment of the sublime heights of ideal womanhood and this in no sense through an obscure process of mysticism but through the analytical precision of an exact science.

ANXIETY PROBLEMS
We should be able to take most worries in our stride without becoming unduly anxious but if we get to the point where we feel physically wretched where problems loom terrifyingly in our minds by day and pursue us relentlessly into our dreams by night it is time to take stock of the situation.Irrational anxiety may have a purely physical cause such as a poor diet leading to a deficiency of minerals and vitamins.Low blood sugar level or too many stimulants in the form of coffee, tea and cigarettes can also contribute to a feeling of impending doom.Inevitably the worse we feel the worse we become.Holding ourselves taut and strung out with tension can create difficulties in breathing it makes muscles ache, the jaw stiff the neck rigid and we may suffer from stomach pains.we slump into a depressed posture which causes indigestion and constipation.Nervous tensions, stress and strain not only upset the digestive system but may also interfere with the hormonal balance of the body.we become tired, our faces become drawn and indented with anxious lines and we look and therefore feel doubly dreadful.
All the unpalatable platitudes which were meant to stop us Feeling sorry for ourselves can he crystallized into
several very commonsensical suggestions.Take some regular exercise in which the mind has to become totally absorbed in what you are doing and thoughts cannot wander a quick and unaccustomed jog around the block whilst your mind is busy beavering unhappily away will not do.
When an anxious, aggressive, fearful or negative thought burrows randomly into your consciousness briskly disperse it with a pleasant picture of your own choosing and work hard elaborating on that.Refuse to allow yourself to dwell upon beastly thoughts.especially those inflicted upon you, willy nilly by the media. The days are gone when we might have collected the leaves of heliotrope in which we could wrap bay leaves and a wolfs tooth to protect ourselves against cruel thoughts and unkind words.
Relaxation or learning to relax.taking long controlled breaths, practising yoga or meditation, swimming or walking with a purpose will all help to dispel anxiety. So will a long chat into a friendly ear.One of the best methods of relaxing is to have a massage or to visit a reflexologist and have your ieet massaged this is something that you can do for yourself at home and it will make you feel immeasurably better.as will having your back, shoulders and neck massaged.espeeially if with practise.you can manage to induce in yoursell a trance like state.I have heard it said that in order to achieve this one must turn ones third eye inwards.
Essential oils are some of the best remedies for reducing tension.Use them in a carrier oil to massage the body or throw a few drops into a warm bath. The following are those most frequently recommended to relieve tension and stress basil, marjoram, fennel, hyssop, rosemary, thyme, tarragon and sage.If the hormonal balance is effected both drinking sage tea and massaging with essential oil of sage are particularly effective. All of these herbs should be taken in tea and used lavishly in cooking too.Bergamot, camomile, juniper, lavender, vervain and orange can also be used as essential oils in bath and massage and the herbs used in tea as a mild sedative and digestive.Coriander, geranium, niroli, cedarwood and frankincense are spicy healing oils which are particularly calming when used in the bath.
There are very few old fashioned remedies to relieve anxiety beyond suggesting that one eats plenty of brown bread, wheatgerm, molasses, honey, milk and oats.Self help is by far the best remedy for anxiety.Although not initially an easy answer once you have learned the lesson it is always there for you to fall back on in a crisis and although habit forming it is not detrimental to the health.
SMOKING PROBLEMS
The way cigarettes bring on heart damage is still something of a mystery but three possible explanations are:
1. Nicotine repeatedly over stimulates the heart.
2. The carbon monoxide absorbed into the blood takes the place of oxygen and hampers nourishment of the heart muscle and other tissues.People with angina pectoris develop the chest pain quicker if they smoke.Even being in the same room with people who are smoking may aggravate these chest pains.
3. The smoke damages the lining of the coronary arteries, allowing artery clogging cholesterol to build up and narrow the passage ways.
Evidence that heart attacks are common among smokers is now beyond serious dispute. The risk is in proportion to the amount of tobacco smoked. This includes the age at which smoking is begun the number of cigarettes smoked and the degree of inhalation.
The risk of heart attacks occurring at an age below 40 years and of consequent sudden death is also more among heavy smokers than among non smokers.
Discontinuance of smoking lessens this risk so much so that those who smoked previously but stopped later on five years later their chances of getting heart attack had come down to the same level as those of non smokers.
HAY FEVER DISEASE
Bouts of sneezing occurring in a particular season in medical terminology called seasonal allergic rhinitis and in layman language hay fever is the commonest form of allergy.Hay fever does not have any connection with hay.It is the seasonal occurrence of sneezing and running of the nose with congestion in the nose and itching in the eyes and nose.Year after year these symptoms occur in a patient in the same seasons while in other months he feels perfectly normal. It may occur in children or in older people but mostly it occurs among young people.Males and females are equally effected by it.The symptoms may be mild or very severe and distressing.
Hay fever occurs in those who have inherited an allergic background. As the pollens to which they are allergic appear in the air in a particular season of the year the symptoms of the disease occur seasonally.
SYMPTOMS
The onset of sneezing may be gradual or quite sudden depending on the degree of exposure to the particular pollens to which the patient is allergic. When the onset is gradual the attack is usually preceded by a mild sensation of itching and burning of the eyes or mild irritation in the nose or itching of the palate inside the mouth.Attacks of sneezing start especially in the early hours of the morning when there is a sudden increase in the concentration of pollens in the air.Marked nasal congestion and profuse running of the nose and eyes follow the sneezing paroxysms.
As the attack progresses the nasal mucous membrane becomes highly sensitive and responds with sneezing to small stimuli which were previously innocuous such as the slightest draft strong odours or minute amounts of dust.
Many patients suffering from hay fever also complain of various constitutional symptoms such as lassitude, loss of appetite, drowsiness, etc. Some of these symptoms may be due to the self administration of antihistamine drugs.
Accompanying Asthma: In some patients symptoms of bronchial asthma also appear. They may start at the onset of the disease or appear later. In certain cases along with the symptoms of hay fever there is a cough only and no bronchial spasm.Symptoms of cough and asthma may continue even when attacks of sneezing cease.Diagnosis of the condition is not difficult and is revealed by the case history.
In the treatment of such cases it is important to find out the pollen or pollens to which the patient is allergic. This is done by means of skin tests with the extracts of the pollens.Scratch or intracutaneous tests giving positive reactions for the pollens coupled with a confirmation of the same through consultation of the pollen calendar, confirms the causative pollens.
TREATMENT: Hyposensitization with the incriminated pollens yields excellent results in this condition.
URTICARIA DISEASE
Urticaria is one of the commonest manifestations of allergy a majority of the people having it at one time or another. In most of these cases it is a transient phenomenon occurring only once or twice. In some it comes up only in a particular season in others it persists for weeks, months and years making life miserable.
Urticaria may be localized at some part of the body or spread all over the body.It may occur as only a few spots or it may be confluent.Raised reddish areas of different shapes and sizes appear which cause itching and last from a few minutes to a few hours without leaving behind any trace.Fresh urticarial patches may continue appearing while the older ones disappear.
Urticaria may also be accompanied by swelling of certain parts of the body such as lips, tongue, hands and feet the condition is called angio-oedema.The swelling and redness of the skin in cases of urticaria is due to the release of histamine in the tissues.
Some of the Causes of Urticaria are:
1. Physical agents such as cold, heat, sunlight and mechanical pressure.
2. Emotional causes such as laughter, anxiety and panic.
3. Food articles such as nuts, seeds, fish, chicken, eggs, citrus fruits.
4. Drugs out of which aspirin is the common offender others are antibiotics, laxatives etc.
5. Sometimes insect bites and stings apart from causing local reactions of swelling.
6. Unknown causes which form the majority of the cases.
URTICARIA TREATMENT
If an examination of the stool shows presence of a parasite the proper treatment may in some cases be helpful.Foci of infection in the teeth, tonsils, and other places should be treated appropriately.
Commonly known allergic articles of diet such as eggs, fish, milk, chocolate, dried fruits, etc should be eliminated and the results noted. If there is an improvement in the symptoms then all the eliminated foods should be re administered one by one and the effect of each noted. There should be an interval of at least one week before a new food is added to the diet.Patients should be warned against taking any pain relieving tablets, laxatives, sedatives, etc.
As for symptomatic relief various antihistamine tablets are available. The particular brand which will suit an individual can only be found by trial and error.
As General Measures:
1. Avoid excessive physical and mental stress.
2. Reduce or avoid physical irritation of the skin.
3. Avoid self medication and consult your doctor.
4. Avoid histamine releasing foods such as bananas, strawberries.
VOMITINGS
Ipecac: When there is constant nausea food is vomited the tongue is red.
Antim Crud: When the tongue is thick white coated.
Robinia: When there is sour vomiting.
Arsenic: When there is burning in the stomach, debility, thirst, vomiting due to an ulcer in the stomach, restlessness.
Aethusa: When there is vomiting of curdled milk in children and they sleep after the vomit.
Kreosote: When it occurs during pregnancy or hysteria.
Apomorphia: For vomiting of pregnant women or addicts of alcohol or opium.
Arnica: When it occurs due to injury to head.
Cocculus: For vomiting in ship, boat, bus, train or car.
Millefolium: When there is vomiting of red blood.
Hamamelis: When there is vomiting of dark blood.
Phosphorus: When cold water is vomited as soon as it becomes warm in stomach.
Nux Vom: When there is bilious or acid vomiting.
HEART ATTACK DISEASE
A Patient may complain of a strange sense of mid sternal uneasiness associated with apprehension and a fast pulse. If he has had a heart attack before and develops such a sensation at some later time he must get himself examined by his doctor.Similarly those with a family history of heart attack and those with high level of cholesterol in the blood must get themselves examined in such a situation.
Pain or numbness in the jaw often occurs as part of radiating chest pain but may occur alone. It usually occurs in the lower jaw on either or both sides.Toothache may indeed be a dental problem but if the aching tooth is a healthy one the pain may be a symptom of heart attack.Rarely a heart attack may present itself as numbness of the left or both the wrists.
A sudden sweating in a middle aged or old man without any obvious reason must be looked in for heart disease. In a case of heart attack when the symptoms are relatively mild or the distribution or pain atypical the diagnosis may be very difficult indeed. The following two case reports are illustrative.
1. R.S 54 year old complained of pain in the upper abdomen which seemed to be due to acute inflammation of the pancreas. But the laboratory tests could not confirm this.On going over the history again it was found that the patient had similar attacks of pain before also for the last over a year, the pain would start on exertion of the left side in the back and would then spread to the abdomen. This was relieved on resting. An E.C.G. established the diagnosis of cardiac infarction.
2. P.R. 43 years old had for the last six months frequent attacks of pain in the front of the chest one and a half hours after taking meals. He was being treated as a case of ulcer of the stomach. However all the laboratory investigation including X ray of the abdomen after swallowing barium were negative. An E.C.G. established the diagnosis of coronary heart disease.
MALARIA TREATMENT
This is an intermittent fever the symptoms of which are common knowledge.Generally fever begins with chill, often severe chill, which may last for minutes or even a few hours. After the chill fever rises and sometimes it is as high as 104 or 105 after a few hours the patient perspires and fever comes down to normal.
This paroxysm is repeated the same time next day or after two or three days. When the fever attacks daily it is called quotidian and when it recurrs after 48 hours it is called tertian and when after 72 hours it is Quartan.Sometimes both chill and perspiration or one of these are absent. This fever is caused by a particular mosquito which injects material parasites into the child.
Cinchona or Quinine kills these parasites and thus in Allopathy it is the remedy of all sorts of material fevers. Many different preparations of QUININE are available in the market and are extensively used in malaria.3 or 4 tablets daily often check the malarial paroxysms, but often fever reappears after some time. For a complete and radical cure of malaria.
Homoeopathic medicines are the best, but you will have to select the medicine exactly according to the symptoms of the patient such as the time of chill and fever symptoms during fever thirst, restlessness, pains, etc and other general and particular symptoms of the patient. Here are the symptoms of some of the important medicines.
IPECAC: When gastric symptoms predominate such as nausea, heaviness of stomach, salivation, vomiting, bitter taste, and the time of fever is generally between 9 to 11 pm chill for a few minutes but fever last longere, chill is aggravated in warm room or hot drink produces oppression in the chest. It is claimed that if the symptoms are not clear two or three doses of IPECAC will either cure the patient or the symptoms will become more prominent which will help selection of the right remedy. It is also useful when fever persists even after QUININE or ARSENIC is taken. It also cures the effects of the abuse of QUININE.
ARSENICUM ALBUM:12 The time of fever is generally after 12 am or 12 pm.All the three stages are not marked chill and heat are mixed or alternated. In chronic cases when liver and spleen are effected. The patient drinks a little but too often.Anguish anxiety a burning feeling but the patient wants to cover himself.Great restlessness, great prostration. The patient is weak and emaciated fevers yield to this remedy readily as well as fevers which occur twice every day.In the beginning use 3x potency every 4 hours or so, but in chronic cases give 200 or 1000 and during apyrexia at least 2 doses.
BODY CARE
Broadly speaking, yoga education of the physical is twofold having as its objectives.
(i) care, development and control of the external body.
(ii) care, development and control of the internal organs.
The former includes postural training and personal hygiene while the latter consists of varied intricate processes which directly affect the health, development and control of the internal organs.
Of these the yoga postural training while in the main subordinated to the highest spiritual objective is sufficiently exhaustive even as a comprehensive scheme of physical education.Because of their marked physiological reactions with the minimum waste of energy and other similar hygienic benefits the yoga postures offer a unique system of physical training to a women.
What is highly important however is the right selection of the most hygienic postures, either static or dynamic from the many so that they may be systematized into a harmonious course of daily exercises physiologically and otherwise most suited to the peculiar needs of a woman.
With regard to the intricate yoga processes even while these are primarily intended to purify the nervous system they directly affect also the health development and control of almost all the internal organs.Of these the elementary practices have been explained in the official publications of the Institute while the more advanced and complicated require to be studied under the personal guidance of a scientific yogin.
Where such guidance is not available it is safer to defer the study than to risk an injury through misguided practice. This does not mean that the higher yoga practices are injurious but it certainly means that any scientific study undertaken without authorized direction especially when it happens to be an experiment on one own person is likely to prove fruitless or even injurious.
INCREASE HEIGHT
Increasing in height as the first preliminary to yoga physical education those who find that they are below the average height should try to increase the same.In considering the possibility of making one body taller the first important fact is that the height depends upon the skeleton i.e the growth and condition of the bones. There are really three divisions which determine the complete stature of an individual viz.
(i) the length of the legs and
(ii) the spine and
(iii) the height of the cranium.
Usually great variations in height are chiefly due to the differences in the length of the legs and the spine since the height of the cranium is more or less uniform.
Two since the extremities are largely responsible for the increase in height the need of such constitutional exercise as would allow maximum stretching of the extremities deserves special emphasis and attention because any attempt to improve the stature by other special methods must fail so long as these fundamental requirements are neglected.Any stretching of the body at full length therefore is of utmost importance for three distinct purposes.
(i) relieving the compression of the cartilages of the spine
(ii) stretching of the skeletal muscles more particularly of the extremities and
(iii) encouraging freedom to and growth of the lungs, heart, and other vital organs.
Although the vital organs function automatically and involuntarily it is an accepted fact that through the immediate control of the skeletal muscles one can increase the activity of the inner vital organs indirectly by making demands upon the large muscles which are developmentally related to them.
