This week Twitter is turning into a comedy club, and you’ve got the best seats in the house, all for the price of free. We’re not saying that enjoying your favorite comedians on Twitter is a cheapskate’s way to avoid the cover and two-drink minimum at your local club. By all means, pull up a chair, get on Twitter, and pour a couple of glasses as Comedy Central’s #ComedyFest unfolds on Twitter from April 29-May 3.
Almost from the beginning of Twitter, comedians have been pushing the boundaries and creating a new form of comedy within the limits of 140 characters.
And this week, Comedy Central (@ComedyCentral) is celebrating that comedy and those comedians, with the Comedy Central #ComedyFest, running from today through Friday. On Twitter, on ComedyCentral.com and on the air, you’ll be able to enjoy over 20 events featuring 67 comedians, including Q&As, roasts, and live-tweeting stand-up specials and favorite funny films.
Wait - make that 68 comedians. In the first event of #ComedyFest, the incomparable Mel Brooks will be joining Twitter today as @MelBrooks. He’ll be participating in a discussion with another legend of comedy, Carl Reiner (@CarlReiner) -- the 2,000 year old men, if you will -- hosted by contemporary funnyman Judd Apatow (@JuddApatow). Everyone is invited to watch the conversation between these icons of comedy: the event will live-stream in @MelBrooks’ first tweet, as well as on cc.com, starting at 2pm PT. You can ask these legends questions of your own by tweeting with #ComedyFest... and if you’ve ever seen their routines, you’ll know that nothing is off-limits.
And that’s just the beginning! Make sure you don’t miss a single laugh by checking out the full schedule here -- and be sure to follow @ComedyCentral for updates and programming. To find and follow all the participants on Twitter, visit this page. Here’s a small sampling of what you’ll find during the week-long #ComedyFest:

It’s been a historic week on Twitter, as two former U.S. Presidents let their presence be known on Twitter. Bill Clinton joined the ranks of President Barack Obama, all 100 U.S. Senators and 95 percent of the House of Representatives, while the dedication of George W. Bush’s new Bush Center brought us closer to all 5 living presidents via Twitter.
Earlier this week while making an appearance on the “Colbert Report”, Bill Clinton officially joined Twitter as @billclinton. He sent his first Tweet to the show’s host Stephen Colbert (@stephenathome) and his daughter, Chelsea Clinton (@chelseaclinton), both of whom responded.
Excited to join @chelseaclinton and my good friend @stephenathome on Twitter! — Bill Clinton (@billclinton) April 25, 2013

Every living president, former world leaders and dignitaries, as well as Bush Administration alumni and other notable guests attended the dedication, many of whom live-tweeted the event using the hashtag #BushCenter.

Today, were releasing Twitter #music, a new service that will change the way people find music, based on Twitter. It uses Twitter activity, including Tweets and engagement, to detect and surface the most popular tracks and emerging artists. It also brings artists’ music-related Twitter activity front and center: go to their profiles to see which music artists they follow and listen to songs by those artists. And, of course, you can tweet songs right from the app.
The songs on Twitter #music currently come from three sources: iTunes, Spotify or Rdio. By default, you will hear previews from iTunes when exploring music in the app. Subscribers to Rdio and Spotify can log in to their accounts to enjoy full tracks that are available in those respective catalogs. We will continue to explore and add other music service providers.
So, if you’re interested in the songs that have been tweeted by the artists and people you follow on Twitter, you can navigate to #NowPlaying to view and listen to those songs.
Or if you’re scrolling through a chart and you want to learn more about a band, like Chvrches, you can tap their avatar to see their top song, follow them right from the chart, or tap their Twitter username to go to their profile.
Or if you want to listen to music from the artists Wiz Khalifa follows, you can search for his name using the search icon in the top right corner. Then tap one of the artists you’re interested in and hit the play button to begin listening, or press play on the player to listen to all the artists.
And as you discover new songs that you want to share with your followers on Twitter, simply tap the spinning disc in the lower left corner. This opens the player, and you can tweet from there using the Tweet icon in the top right corner.
You can download Twitter #music from the App Store today, or enjoy the web version, which will be rolling out over the next few hours: music.twitter.com. Right now, the service is available in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Over time, we will bring the service to Android as well as to more countries.
Twitter and music go great together. People share and discover new songs and albums every day. Many of the most-followed accounts on Twitter are musicians, and half of all users follow at least one musician. This is why artists turn to Twitter first to connect with their fans — and why we wanted to find a way to surface songs people are tweeting about. We offered music artists an early look at the service. You can see some of their reactions below. We hope you like it, too.

We just released a new version of Twitter for Android. Its new design reflects a native Android experience: wider and taller timelines that fill the screen, a flat navigation bar, tap and hold for quick actions, and more. You can now quickly navigate between tabs by swiping across your screen. And as you type your Tweet or search, you’ll see username and hashtag suggestions, making it easier to connect with friends and join conversations.
In addition to the Android app, we’ve also updated Twitter for iPhone and mobile.twitter.com. All three mobile apps, plus twitter.com, now show more types of content in expanded Tweets: photo galleries, apps and product listings.
You’ll also see a new link right below content that is shared from another mobile app, such as Foursquare or Path.
The link lets you open or download the app right from the Tweet, depending on whether or not you have it installed. As an example, if you expand a Tweet to view a photo from Flickr, you can tap the link to open the photo in Flickr. If you don’t yet have the Flickr app on your phone, you can tap to install it from the Tweet.
These updates, which are rolling out to users over the next several days, are part of our ongoing effort to make it easier for you to connect with interesting and relevant content on Twitter. If you’re interested in the under-the-hood details, there are more on our Developer blog.
You can download these updates from the Google Play or App Store. Posted by Jonathan Le (@jle)

Our second Hack Week of the year has just begun. (Yes, it is April Fools Day; no this is not a joke.) This is one of my favorite parts of each quarter –– as a company, we take a full week to work with people from other teams, explore new ideas, experiment with different projects and let our creativity run wild.
Some projects are hobby projects, and they may inspire new ideas or cause teams to think about a core feature in a new way. Other projects ship –– awesome and unique products have come out of Hack Week. Have you downloaded your Twitter archive yet? That was a Hack Week project. Or have you seen the Tweets from @twisitor, a birdhouse you can tweet from when you visit Twitter HQ? That was one of last quarter’s Hack Week projects.
Thanks for inspiring new ideas and motivating us to build this week. Posted by Raffi Krikorian (@raffi)

Starting today, we are shifting to a two-tiered service: Everyone can use our basic service, Twttr, but you only get consonants. For five dollars a month, you can use our premium “Twitter” service which also includes vowels.
We’re doing this because we believe that by eliminating vowels, we’ll encourage a more efficient and “dense” form of communication. We also see an opportunity to diversify our revenue stream. Here’s our mockup of the most retweeted Tweet of all time as it would appear in the new Twttr:
A E I O U AND SOMETIMES Y
Because our users come first, we believe that “Y” should always be free to everyone — today and forever. You’ll notice in the Twttr example above, the “y” is clearly visible. Also, the vowels in URLs will be also be free for everyone, forever. You can also Tweet in non-Latin characters based languages, like Japanese, Chinese, Arabic or Korean. These languages will remain unaffected by our service change.
EXTRA ROOM, BETTER TWEETS
In addition to our normal suite of Promoted Products for advertisers, we are now also offering a single character extension, expanding the length of a Tweet to 141 characters, for those moments when you need just one more character to finish your thought. The price of the extra character is based on a bidding system reflecting the popularity of the character you would like to add.
Sorry, only one-letter bidding is allowed. There is no option to purchase a second additional character at this time.
EARLY RESULTSWe tested this new breakthrough product change with a few key partners in order to get the details right. For example, just moments after we rolled this out, it was inspiring to see how just quickly people are taking to the new service.

@twitter Y R y00 d0yng thys? #nvwls — rob delaney (@robdelaney) April 1, 2013PRODUCT INSPIRATION Our own VP of Product, @sippey, got his inspiration for the new Twitter Tiers from several (perhaps surprising) sources. “I was carpooling home after Twitter’s seventh birthday party,” he told me, “with my head filled with images from our past, like our early logo where we spelled it TWTTR, in neon green toothpaste. And then Prince’s song “I would die 4 U” came on the radio. I felt like there was something there, but I wasn’t sure what or how to bring it to market. Then later that night, I was watching “Wheel of Fortune” with @adambain, and a contestant yelled out ‘I wanna buy a vowel’. Everything just sort of clicked. Adam and I turned to each other and high-fived. It was one of those product moments that just felt like magic.” TWTTR.COM Twttr will roll out slowly to a small percentage of users, growing to 100% over the next few days. We recommend that you practice using only consonants (and “y”) with the hashtag #nvwls (or if you have paid for our premium service, use #icanhasvowels). To make the transition easier for you, we’ve built a site that automatically transforms your Tweets into a Twttr friendly format. Try it today at TWTTR.COM. We bet you’ll appreciate the time you save. Hr’s t mr twttng! Posted by Kvyn Wl Director of Product, #nvwls

There’s an old English saying, _“Keep a thing seven years, and youll always find a use for it.”_ Today is Twitter’s 7th birthday, which we observe on the day @jack first tweeted. Since then, we’ve seen breathtaking velocity in Twitter’s growth, which is due entirely to your many uses of it. We’re gratified that so many millions of you have made Twitter yours.
It’s thanks to all of you that our open, real-time platform is thriving: we have well over 200 million active users creating over 400 million Tweets each day. The steep trajectory of Twitter’s momentum is something @jack, @ev and @biz only dreamed about back in 2006.
As we’ve grown, Twitter has become a true global town square — a public place to hear the latest news, exchange ideas and connect with people all in real time. This is where you come to connect with the world at large. Get on your soapbox to critique elected officials, or go _sotto voce_ to the neighbor next to you. And as in other gathering places, commerce happens too (and jokes and art-making and debating, and — you get the idea).
This global town square even extends into space: an astronaut like Commander Chris Hadfield can express himself — and so can Captain Kirk. And we can all enjoy the moments when they connect with each other:
@cmdr_hadfield Are you tweeting from space? MBB — William Shatner (@WilliamShatner) January 3, 2013

And were detecting signs of life on the surface. — Chris Hadfield (@Cmdr_Hadfield) January 3, 2013We made a video celebrating some of the many moments on Twitter so far. Here’s to your creativity, curiosity and experimentation on our platform. And again, thank you for making Twitter everything it is today. Posted by Karen Wickre (@kvox) Editorial Director

Today, we are releasing Twitter for Windows 8, a new app that makes it easier than ever to share and discover content on Windows 8 devices. In addition to familiar Twitter features, including the Home, Connect, Discover, and Me tabs, this app introduces new functionality that takes advantage of unique Windows 8 features.
* SNAP VIEW: Use another app alongside Twitter. Snap Twitter into the left or right side of the screen and then start using another app. You’ll be able to keep up with the conversations that are happening on Twitter while you watch a streaming video or read a news story. With snap view, you can adjust the size of the app to one-third, two-thirds or full screen.
* PHOTOS: Large and center. With an all-new landscape view, not only can you view a larger version of individual photos, but you can also swipe horizontally to view multiple photos in the Discover tab or a user’s profile. Tap a photo to view it in full screen, which showcases large photos in the center of the screen, or view the photo gallery from your favorite users.
* SHARE CHARM: Tweet from any app, at any time. Simply swipe from the right edge of Windows 8 and then choose the Share charm to share content from any app, such as a photo or news article, to Twitter.
* SEARCH CHARM: Search when you’re inspired. Similar to the Share charm, the Search charm makes it easy to find an account or see Tweets using a certain hashtag. Just swipe from the right edge of Windows 8 from any app and select the Search charm.
* LIVE TILES AND NOTIFICATIONS: Don’t miss a beat. Keep up with what’s happening on Twitter using the Twitter Live Tiles and notifications, which show no matter which app you’re running.
Twitter for Windows 8 is available now in the Windows Store in 22 languages*. We’re excited to bring this Twitter app to Windows 8 users, and hope you’ll enjoy it too.

While thousands of people gathered at St. Peter’s Square to celebrate the announcement of Pope Francis, the rest of the world came together on Twitter. As speculation about the new pope swirled about, much like the white smoke from the chimney at the Sistine Chapel, people across the globe tweeted with anticipation. After 45 minutes of post-smoke waiting, the new @Pontifex was announced.
Throughout today, as anticipation mounted about an announcement, we saw over 7 million Tweets about the papacy. As people reacted to Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran’s announcement of the new Pope, we saw more than 130,000 Tweets per minute. The Pope’s official account, @Pontifex, weighed in as he concluded his first address:

In a modern-day “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” moment, Senator Rand Paul (@SenRandPaul), R-Kentucky, stood on the Senate floor for almost 13 hours yesterday. He was using the filibuster to debate the Obama Administration’s drone policy prior to a vote on the White House’s nomination for CIA director.
The day began around 11:47am EST:
Speaking on the Senate floor at length & actively filibustering Brennan’s nomination until further notice Tune into @cspan now #filiblizzard — Senator Rand Paul (@SenRandPaul) March 6, 2013As the hours passed, conversation on Twitter continued to grow. Supporters tweeted with #standwithrand, while others joined the conversation with creative hashtags like #filiblizzard and #paulnighter. Over a million Tweets were sent yesterday about the filibuster. Senate rules do not permit carrying of digital devices while in the chamber, so Paul’s colleague Senator Ted Cruz (@SenTedCruz) joined him on the floor to note that “the Twitterverse is blowing up” and read aloud (printed!) Tweets of support:
Reading tweets supporting @senrandpaul for taking a stand for liberty: youtube.com/watch?v=IpW0-W… #StandWithRand — Senator Ted Cruz (@SenTedCruz) March 7, 2013
Sen. Cruz reading Tweets from all of you meant a lot to me. Protecting the Constitution is everyones fight. — Senator Rand Paul (@SenRandPaul) March 7, 2013
Twitter is woven through the DNA of this filibuster, taking an obscure legislative process into the public space. — Rick Wilson (@TheRickWilson) March 7, 2013During the night, Senators and even House members headed to the Senate to witness the filibuster and tweet to constituents to explain the process.

Today we’re updating our iOS and Android apps along with mobile.twitter.com to make it easier and faster to find and see content on Twitter.
We recently introduced the ability to see older Tweets in search results. Now when you search for important Twitter moments, you may see a Top Tweet separate from the rest of the results. This Tweet is the best match for your query based on relevance and engagement. To see additional Tweets from this time period, tap on “View more from this time.” Try searching for “four more years” or “deep challenge” on your phone to see an example.
We’re also introducing a couple features specifically on Twitter for iPhone and Twitter for iPad.
* TWEETS AND WEB BROWSING: When you open a link from a Tweet in your timeline, you’ll see that Tweet displayed at the bottom of the app’s built-in web browser. This provides additional context to the page you’re viewing, and makes it easy for you to retweet, favorite or reply to the Tweet as you’re reading an article or watching a video. If you don’t want to see the Tweet, simply tap the page and the Tweet will slide away from view. By pulling up or down on the tray icon, the Tweet will appear or disappear from view.
* AUTOCOMPLETE: We’ve improved autocomplete suggestions so that when you search on Twitter or you’re composing a Tweet, you’ll see more hashtag, topic and username suggestions as you type. Additionally, autocomplete suggestions for topic searches will be updated more frequently and feel real-time.
You can download this update from the App Store or Google Play. Posted by Nick Takayama (@ntakayama)

Yesterday at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Mozilla announced that 18 mobile operators from around the world will support Firefox OS, its new mobile operating system that takes advantage of the power of the web. When those devices begin to ship, Twitter for Firefox OS will be available in the Firefox Marketplace.
Similar to our other mobile apps, Twitter for Firefox OS has a rich interface, featuring the Home, Connect, Discover and Me tabs, as well as the search and compose Tweet icons, so you can easily find and send Tweets from anywhere in the app.
Weve also implemented support for a feature unique to Firefox OS: Web Activities. This lets you tweet photos directly out of any app that also supports web activities such as the built-in photos app.
Were excited about the future of Firefox OS, and look forward to phones shipping with support for our new Twitter app. Posted by Manuel Deschamps (@manuel)
